Subject: can't build TeX formats with TEXINPUTS set
Date: Fri, 16 Dec 1994 19:05:08 EST
From: Stephen Gildea <gildea@x.org>
I am updating my TeX from the web2c 6.1 and texmf lib 6.8
distributions. Mostly it went very smoothly. Thanks for all
your work making TeX easier to install; this is much better than
in the old days.
A "make fmts" in web2c/tex fails because I have the environment
variable TEXINPUTS set to point to my old TeX inputs directory.
I notice that the Makefile in this directory clobbers TEXPOOL when
dumping formats; perhaps it should do the same with TEXINPUTS.
Oddly, setting TEXINPUTS to a null value seems to be the same as
setting it to "." I consider this a bug. A null value should be the
same as unsetting it, otherwise how are you going to do it with shells
that don't have "unset" (like Ultrix)?
The only reason I set TEXINPUTS is to add my private directory of
macro packages. It sure would be nice if there were a way to do that
without also mentioning the standard directory. I would like an
environment variable that augments, rather than overriding, the
default path.
Another solution would be to have a token in the path that means
"insert default path here." Xt (the X Toolkit) does this with the
"%D" escape. See http://www.x.org/consortium/R6doc/man/Xt/XtResolvePathname
